24 Hours of Beer Festival: Sat/Sun Nov. 3/4
(More Details at Official
Festival website)
9 days to First Sip!
NOTE
This
is the Final Edition of the Belgium Today Newsletter
before we shut down in preparation for departure
in just one week. I'd like to thank everyone for coming,
and hope you all have a great time. Thanks also for
listening to me blabber on so much and agreeing to stay
loose when we hit Europe this is a grand adventure
in the making, no mistake!
ARRIVAL
We
should still be on for Steve's friend giving us a driving
tour the first day in Brussels and up to Antwerp.
Steve's
a bit concerned she'll pick us up and we will accidentally
forget our good friend Steve at the airport. To avoid
this, we've decided to meet Steve and driver at a café
or restaurant in the central square of Brussels (La
Grand Place) for lunch. Steve's getting final info on
where as we speak.
Of
course, with 6 people plus luggage, this may not work
out quite as expected, so we'll have to stay loose on
this one.
PACKING
Last-minute
packing items!
I'm
bringing my 6 GB Creative Labs Jukebox MP3
player for personal audio pleasure (if I can get
the f'ing batteries to work), along with the JVC
MiniDV Digital Camcorder for full embarrassment.
I'll have my Kodak DC4800 Digital Camera to record
events and share at the end of the trip. I'll have a
small pair of tinny plastic speakers to attach
to the Jukebox so we'll have in-room entertainment.
Oh, and I'm bringing my Game Boy Color, excellent
for long trips! (UPDATE: Fuzzy bought me the Game
Boy Advance, so I'll bring that instead! Games include:
Namco set for Gameboy Advance (Ms. Pacman, Dig Dug,
Galaxian, Galaga, Pole Position). From the Game Boy
Color: Prince of Persian Tomb Raider Wario Land III
Mario Golf (AWESOME) Vegas Games Zelda Qix Gallery III
with several Mario titles.
If
you've considered making a purchase of a game system
or camera or whatnot, now's the time to do it! Dan Rowley
took my urgings and purchased the ol' digital wallet
to store extra digital pictures! So, we've got capacity
for probably 2000+ pictures between the two of us!
See
Travel Pete's
Europlanning Section for packing advice and tips.
This also has a packing list from this same trip that
I took last year. I stayed for about 3 weeks or so during
October, so it should give a good sense of what to forget
and what not to!
Last
packing items: Look through my list of packing items.
You probably don't need to bring duplicates of everything
(i.e. sewing kits) so feel free to skip that stuff.
Assume
we'll probably need to do laundry at least once, 5-7
days in (i.e. you don't have to pack 35 pairs of underwear).
ITINERARY
UPDATES
First, though, I've
added a picture of the elusive Chad Wright who will
be traveling with us. Now we have pictures of everyone
but George Anderson.
0.
Check out http://travel.state.gov
for travel updates. The A
Safe Trip Abroad pamphlet they have online is good
for more generic safety tips. Don't let it scare ya
too much, it's meant to cover events from Canada (eh?)
to Kurdistan, so most of it doesn't really apply to
Belgium. The specific Belgium information from the State
Department is at travel.state.gov/belgium.html
and the Netherlands info is at travel.state.gov/netherlands.html
The most critical stuff is to keep a low profile, don't
carry valuables if you can help it, don't wander around
alone too much, don't look lost (even though you will
be), etc.
1.
George Anderson will NOT be joining us the 2nd weekend
in Belgium. He must be off to America to see the sights
of California, Apparently. I think he's just trying
to escape crappy English weather.
2.
We are considering a few options provided by Steve Urban
of Urban's Hang Suite and European Meet-n-Greet of
Connecticut.
We
may have an offer to stay with Steve's friends near
Brugge on Monday night (and possibly Tuesday night).
This would be in an effort to see the coast and Brugge
and whatever else is around western Belgium. Can it
truly be said that Belgium has a West? I mean, it's
pretty small. Oh, well, let's go with it.

FINAL
REMINDERS
Remember
to have your credit card and debit card pin numbers!
Consider letting your credit card company know that
you are going to Europe so they don't accidentally decline
charges on your card, thinking the number has been stolen.
REMEMBER
BLAH BLAH BLAH. Just get there!
Ciao,
BilFish
