Fantastically
hilarious and insightful, this journey through Australia puts
Bryson at his best. Light reading, I only wish it was longer!
If you ever wondered even just a bit about Australia,
or you just love great humor writing, this is the one. Bill Bryson's

Frost
on my Moustache:
Arctic Exploits of a Lord and a Loafer
Witty, fast,
inscrutable, with an Englishman's self-deprecation thrown in for
comic appeal, this journey through the north (recreating an 18th
Century expedition to Iceland and Norway) is part travelogue,
part self-revalation, and all extremely fine-pointed wit. Moore
finds the relevant in the mundane, the fun in the functional.

Neither
Here nor There:
Travels in Europe
No other book
will make you yearn for Europe in quite such a wonderful way!
The most hideous of situations become frosting on the cake on
this journey as Bryson re-creates his own Eurotrippin' youth by
going back, one more time.

Rick
Steves' Postcards from Europe
Sometimes
wistful, Rick's enthusiastic love of Europe shines through each
page. Not just a travelogue, this book gives you great tips on
top destinations throughout Europe, with Rick's eye for gregarious
detail and fun on the road. Rick is occasionally bogged down by
25 years of watching Europe change, it sometimes reminded me of
my grandmother, "25 years ago this place had class, I tell
ya. Times is different!" Yet, an excellent read for all that.

Notes
from a Small Island (Britain)
Having lived,
worked, and traveled in the British Isles, I'll swear that everything
Bryson observes is not only factual, but relevant, interesting,
and rarely stretched too far Britain's just a little wacky,
is all! (Note: my first Bryson book, it started me down the tortuous
path of great travel humor.

Round
Ireland with a Fridge
More dry wit
(well, it is Ireland, so perhaps soggy wit) as seen through
the sometimes pissed eyes of a sociable Brit on a personal journey.
Hawks doesn't bog down in personal introspection except
where a joke's to be had.
A great recollection
of wonderful experiences and the geography of a great and beautiful
(wet) land. A pint of Guinness and fridge on the cover art tip
you off that Hawks is no Mt. Everest adventurer, and harrowing
escapes are few and far between, but that's okay. It's a page-turner,
and too soon you'll be hoping for more and remembering the "Fridge
Man" with fondness and a certain wistfulness.

Made
in America:
An informal history of the English language in
the U.S.
Anyone who's
aspired to wonder why American English is so riddled with strange
complexities and oddities will enjoy this. A scholarly effort,
Bryson creates light, fun reading of what could have been dense,
dense material! I've read it more than once on the road.

Into
Thin Air:
A personal account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
Thrilling
adventure travel at its finest, knowing what's coming doesn't
stop your heart from pounding. This really gave me a sense of
the true man vs. nature struggle and the will power and ability
for individuals to push themselves to the limit.
A classic
page-turner, Jon's compelling style even convinced me to go for
a jog!
